The Enneagram
The Enneagram is a widely used, comprehensive, broad based personality theory that has been utilized and studied in contemporary psychology and psychiatry. The Enneagram model points to nine personality types – see image below for a breakdown of the types described in EPP-C’s training. These types are primarily associated with one of three centres of intelligence: the intellectual centre (head), emotional centre (heart), and instinctual centre (body or gut).
Psychologists, social scientists, therapists, coaches, neurologists, and other professionals agree that the Enneagram is a powerful tool. Each type can be described and differentiated by their unique perspectives, habits of thinking, feelings and behaviours, emerging from their different essential qualities and drives. The nine types can be further differentiated by avoidances and defense mechanisms, and the overlay of levels of awareness (or levels of development). These various lenses by which a person can self-observe can also support their trajectory of growth within their type.
Through self-awareness and techniques associated with enhancing self-awareness, students of the Enneagram can improve their self-regulation and resilience skills, thereby giving them the tools to modify and improve their behaviours.
